Winners 2024
In four categories: Intercultural Moments, Intimate Spaces Across Cultures, Journey of Languages, Literary Escape and People's Choice Winner
People's Choice Winner - Colours of Resilience
The boy's image is an intercultural moment due to its cultural attire, global symbols, urban melting pot, economic diversity, the blend of tradition and modernity, and linguistic interculturalism. The boy's traditional attire represents his cultural heritage, while the balloons symbolize celebration. The setting is an urban environment where multiple cultures coexist and interact, reflecting the intersection of local life with global influences. The boy's solemn demeanour and selling balloons reflect global issues like child labour and economic disparities.
Intercultural Moments Winner
A couple of local kids giving their visitors a tour of town in Caicay, Peru. This intercultural moment reflects on the inevitable human connection even through vast differences in lifestyle.
Intimate Spaces Across Cultures Winner - Rhythm and Hues
This B&W self-portrait taken in April 2020 (Brampton) of my face with Bharatanatyam jewelry, beckons us to ponder the intricate interplay between rhythm and cultural expressions, through the language of dance. "Rhythm and Hues" offers a captivating juxtaposition, challenging conventional notions of vibrancy, urging us to contemplate the subtleties found in light and shadow, textures, and tonal variations, allowing for a more up-close and intimate snapshot of a culture. It invites us to explore how rhythm manifests not only in music, but also in the visual elements, patterns, and contrasts that shape our existence.
Journey of Languages Winner
The act of reading is akin to embarking on a journey, and I relish leaving behind unique imprints on the pages of books that I find captivating. These imprints serve as a testament to my journey I have taken.
Literary Escapes Winner - A window
This little window from one of the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral opens a restricted frame to view the city of Paris, which in some way represent the restricted view of a tourist. When I was teaching my students about Victor Hugo, I always showed them this same picture and we discussed how the author texts offered a less restricted frame for imagination, evoking awe and wonder.
